Despite a warning that they might be in danger, Asian football officials stated on Monday that the Iranian men’s football squad still intends to compete in the forthcoming World Cup in North America.
President Donald Trump cautioned the team on Thursday that attending this summer’s football spectacle, which is co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, could put their “life and safety” at jeopardy.
Iran’s involvement in the war, which was started by US-Israeli operations on February 28, is under question.
The general secretary of the Asian Football Confederation, Windsor Paul John, stated, “As far as we know, Iran is playing.”
“We are keeping an eye on whether they are playing, but they are right now. He stated at a press conference at the AFC’s Kuala Lumpur headquarters, “There is no official information that they are not playing.”
The AFC wanted Iran, a “top team,” to compete in the world championship, Windsor said.
He stated, “So we hope that they will resolve their issues… and be able to participate in the World Cup.”
The Iranian team was welcome, but “I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social Platform.
The Iranian women’s football team captain, who participated in the Asian Cup in Australia, withdrew her asylum application on Sunday.
After being called “traitors” back home for not singing the national anthem, seven members of Iran’s visiting football delegation competing in the Women’s Asian Cup requested asylum in Australia.
Only two of them are now scheduled to stay in Australia after the captain reportedly decided to withdraw her asylum plea.
Threats against families, according to a former player and a Persian-language TV station outside of Iran, put pressure on the players to change their positions.
Australia was accused by Iranian authorities of coercing the players into staying.
The athletes were waiting for their next flight to Iran at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
Windsor responded that the AFC was awaiting news from the squad “when they want to leave” when asked about the women’s immediate future.
“We will support their decision,” he declared.
