The Labour Party has confirmed a new date for the primary elections for president, governor, and representatives.

The Labour Party’s primaries, which were initially slated for May 27 and May 29, 2026, have been rescheduled.

The party announced that all of its primaries will now take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the same time.

The presidential, governorial, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly primaries are all impacted.

Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, signed a statement revealing this.

The statement claims that the primaries for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly were originally planned for May 27, 2026.

Additionally, the National Assembly and presidential primaries were originally scheduled for May 29, 2026.

The party claimed that the dates had been changed because they conflicted with important national events.

“This decision became necessary following the coincidence of the earlier dates with two important national events,” the statement said.

Asogwa clarified that May 27 fell on the same day as Eid el-Kabir, or Eid al-Adha, in 2026.

He also mentioned that on May 29, elected public office holders nationwide would celebrate their third anniversary of taking office.

He claims that the party decided to change its schedule so that members and candidates could fully participate since it thought both events were significant.

He stated, “The Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule in order to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions, given the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary.”

The Labour Party apologized for any disruption that candidates, stakeholders, supporters, and the general public could have as a result of the schedule change.

Additionally, it expressed gratitude to Nigerians and party members for their cooperation and understanding.

Before the primaries, the party asked candidates and interested parties to be aware of the new date and make the required changes.

According to Naija News, the party’s candidates for the presidency, governorship, National Assembly, and state legislative races in the 2027 general elections are anticipated to be chosen through the rescheduled exercise.
