Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the chairman of the House of Representatives Downstream Petroleum Committee, has disclosed that 27 out of 31 All Progressives Congress (APC) members backed Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo’s nomination to be Kano State’s deputy governor.
Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the former deputy governor, resigned weeks after the impeachment process started, according to Naija News.
Doguwa praised Governor Abba Yusuf for appointing Garo as his deputy governor in a statement released on Sunday.
“I have to commend His Excellency, Governor Engr. Abba Kabir’s decision to humbly and voluntarily concede his constitutional right and powers to the legacy component of the old APC under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to nominate for him a Deputy Governor,” he declared.
“We must unequivocally praise the governor for this unique gesture of civility and modesty, as well as for his extraordinary generosity and unmistakable demonstration of his commitment to cooperating for the party’s unity. Second, Governor Kabiru offered our group a number of open posts, including three commissioner slots, to be filled by our members. He said that the governor’s action was the first of its type in history and unparalleled.
During their discussion, Doguwa implied that “the majority of the old legacy party members, including my humble self, have cooperated and supported Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and accepted him as leader of the legacy group in Kano state.” Additionally, he oversaw our meeting last night. In my opinion, the meeting proceeded smoothly and resulted in a unanimous decision in favor of Hon. Murtala Sulen Garo, our previous deputy governor candidate and former commissioner for local government affairs.
Naturally, in a scenario like this, it is impossible to ignore dissenting views. However, out of the 31 attendees, around 27 stakeholders were in agreement and approved Murtala as our top choice for this prestigious role.
The following pragmatic political considerations have served as the foundation for our Murtala decision. 1. In the most recent general election in 2023, Murtala ran as our deputy governor. There is no denying his popular backing and political outreach among our party ranks. 2. Among the state’s 44 LGAs, he has the most impact. 3. It so happened that Murtala Sule Garo was from the same Gwarzo Kabo federal constituency as the former deputy governor of Kwankwasiyya.
“We are certain of these things. Naturally, Murtala is the best candidate to assume this crucial role. However, in accordance with His Excellency the Governor’s orders as the state’s highest party leader, we have chosen to submit three names.
However, to me and the majority of us, the two other names are just “shadow nominees,” or “space holders.” However, Hon. Murtala Sulen Garo is our collective legacy family’s substantive nominee for deputy governor.
Therefore, we humbly ask His Excellency, the Governor, who naturally has the final constitutional discretion and the authority to make this crucial decision, to graciously accept this popular choice made by the members of the legacy party.
“We pledge to His Excellency that we will support him both individually and collectively to win the upcoming elections in 2027.”
