Nigerians have been advised by former Senate President Bukola Saraki to demand improved representation from all elected authorities, not just the President.
Speaking specifically on lawmakers, Saraki urged the public to observe and get input from their representatives.
He claims that if citizens request legislative records, the National Assembly will improve because MPs will be more vigilant.
In an interview with Vanguard, the former governor of Kwara State bemoaned the fact that some MPs win elections every four years while not contributing to plenary discussions in the National Assembly.
“The government won’t have to pay for the single best change that could improve the National Assembly.
“Citizens, not just presidents, are the ones who observe, inquire about, and cast votes on legislative documents.
You see lawmakers who consistently win elections but haven’t even raised their hands to speak for four years. However, they will still prevail. He declared, “Those who are active do not win because they cannot do what you want when they return to their constituencies.”
According to Naija News, Saraki also advocated for electoral changes to guarantee that the proper people are elected, which helps to establish a robust institution.
“The foundation stays weak until we have a procedure that guarantees the right people are elected.”
