Following Atlético Madrid’s unexpected 2-0 victory at Camp Nou in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal, Diego Simeone praised Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich as the best teams in Europe.
According to Naija News, goals from Alexander Sørloth and Julian Alvarez gave the visitors a rare victory in Catalonia. Simeone acknowledged that his team’s victory was historic.
He remarked, “I don’t think my Atletico had ever won here at Camp Nou.” It’s a really challenging place to visit. Barcelona, Paris, and Bayern are undoubtedly the best teams in Europe. We were able to take advantage of crucial times in the game by working well together.
However, a new refereeing storm soon overshadowed the outcome. After an incident involving teammate Marcos Pobel in the second half that Atletico felt should have resulted in a penalty, goalkeeper Juan Musso said his team felt wronged.
While praising the victory, Musso implied that the visitors were dissatisfied with the officiating. The goalie called the decision to deny a spot kick “disappointing and difficult to comprehend,” implying a potential official complaint, despite television replays showing little contact in the penalty area.
Although discussion around VAR is anticipated to heat up prior to the rematch, Barcelona chose not to publicly address the incident and instead concentrated on reversing the deficit in the return leg.
Atletico’s decision to begin play in the 54th minute was another incident that fueled the debate. Viewers were confused when Marc Poblet handled the ball after receiving a short goal kick and then passed it again. Musso backed the call, saying the referee made the right decision.
“The ball was not in play; the referee interpreted the situation correctly. Marc used his hand to grab it and pass it to me. Every time we attempted a goal kick, he was the one who passed to me,” he remarked.
Atletico enters the second leg with a significant lead and rising confidence despite the off-field commotion. Musso’s message was straightforward. “We know what we have to do,” he declared. We have to keep working, keep pushing, and make sure we’re ready for the next ninety minutes.
