In a years-long trademark dispute with US music sensation Katy Perry, Australian designer Katie Perry declared on Wednesday that she had gained the right to sell clothing under her name.
Designer Katie Perry claimed she had claimed the “Katie Perry” brand before the singer became a worldwide hit, accusing her far more well-known namesake of trademark infringement.
However, singer Katy Perry claimed that her songs had already become “viral” when the designer began selling clothing in 2008 and attempted to have the Australian trademark removed.
In 2024, an Australian court ruled that the apparel trademark should be revoked, agreeing with the singer.
However, on appeal, Australia’s High Court decided in favor of the local designer, concluding that there was little chance of “confusion” between the two.

Despite the lawsuit, the singer “has never sought to close down” the Australian company, a spokeswoman for her told AFP.
