In Abuja, Wike receives the remains of the late Senator Mpigi

The remains of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represents Rivers South-East, was delivered to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike on Monday morning.

According to Naija News, Wike picked up the late senator’s remains at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The minister and other political leaders gathered at the airport at around 5:30 a.m. to welcome the late lawmaker’s remains back to the nation, according to a statement issued by his media aide, Lere Olayinka.

Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, the senator’s wife, and their kids were also at the airport, accompanying the body to Nigeria.

Along with other associates and supporters, Wike was joined by the Peoples Democratic Party’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa; Senator Philip Aduda; House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda; and the Renewed Hope Ambassadors’ Rivers State Coordinator, Desmond Akawor.

At the age of 64, Mpigi died in London on Thursday, February 19, 2026. Many in Rivers State’s and other political circles were shocked by his passing.

Wike visited London on Thursday of last week to offer condolences to the senator’s wife and kids.

He also arranged for the late lawmaker’s body to be returned to Nigeria for funeral ceremonies while he was there.
