Just in: A Rivers senator is said to have passed away.

Barinada Mpigi, the Senate Committee on Works’ chairman, passed away.

He was sixty-four.

The lawmaker’s passing was verified to Peoples Gazette on Thursday by a source. At the time this report was filed, information on his death’s circumstances had not yet been made public.

Mpigi, who was born on June 23, 1961, served as the senator for Rivers South-East until his death.

When he was elected to the House of Representatives in 2011, he started his legislative career. He was then elected to a second term in 2016.

He was elected to the Senate in 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, representing the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.

Mpigi was at the center of legislative efforts to solve oil-related economic sabotage when he was chosen chairman of a joint Senate committee created to look into crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region during the Ninth Assembly.

He was also instrumental in overseeing federal infrastructure projects nationwide in his capacity as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works.
