Lagos closes the public restroom due to an open sewage flow.

A public restroom on Savage Street in Ebute Metta has been closed by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LASWAMO) for reportedly dumping raw sewage into a public sewer.

Following inspectors’ confirmation of the infraction, officials closed the facility on Wednesday.

The enforcement action was launched Thursday by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who claimed that the operators purposefully injected raw wastewater into a community drainage line. Strong smells and obvious sewage flow along the street were apparently complaints from the locals.

Wahab stated that such infractions endanger groundwater, public hygiene, and environmental safety, characterizing the act as a public nuisance with major health consequences.

He urged locals and business owners to implement appropriate wastewater disposal procedures and threatened to penalize violators.

Wahab stated that “environmental compliance is a shared civic duty” and that the government would step up its monitoring in high-risk areas.
