Exclusive: Super Eagles Miss Out on Intercontinental Playoffs After FIFA Denies NFF Petition Against DR Congo

The Super Eagles’ hopes of competing for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the intercontinental play-off have been dashed after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lost its appeal against the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association’s alleged player ineligibility, as exclusively reported by Naija News.

According to a trustworthy source who spoke to Naija News, FIFA, the authority that oversees football worldwide, made its final decision on Monday, February 17, and formally informed all of the disputing federations of the decision.

However, the source revealed that FIFA has instructed the parties to refrain from making any public statements because the international organization alone is in charge of formally announcing the decision.

The source claims that FIFA decided that the NFF’s case was insufficient to stop DR Congo from moving on to the March intercontinental play-offs. Consequently, Nigeria’s petition was denied.

The ruling virtually ends the Super Eagles’ chances of making it to the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico, as they will not be able to compete in the six-nation intercontinental play-off tournament.

The argument started when Nigeria lost to DR Congo 4-3 in a penalty shootout in Morocco during the African play-off final in November. The Super Eagles were not directly qualified for the expanded global tournament as a result of that defeat.

The NFF formally petitioned FIFA on December 15, 2025, claiming that six Congolese players who had recently changed their national team were ineligible to play in the pivotal match.

The Nigerian federation’s executives at the time openly declared their belief in the strength of their argument.

“We have a good case,” stated Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the general secretary of the NFF. We believe we have a compelling case, and we are awaiting FIFA’s ruling about our filed grievances.

In previous statements, Mallam Shehu Dikko, the chairman of the National Sports Commission, expressed hope as well, saying he thought Nigeria will have a positive outcome.

According to allegations that surfaced in the weeks preceding the ruling, DR Congo was certain that it would survive the challenge. Senior football officials from Congo and other Francophone nations were pressing FIFA officials, according to Sports247.

The Sports247 article said that Mosengo-Omba and prominent football executives from Congo and several Francophone nations are supposedly utilizing their significant influence within FIFA to advocate for a favorable ruling in this case, citing highly credible sources.

“They are afraid that FIFA might rule in favor of Nigeria based on leaked information and available evidence, and they are aware of how serious the petition is.” The Democratic Republic of the Congo will benefit from his influence in Africa and international football.

FIFA has now finished its investigation and ruled that the complaint does not justify changing the African play-off’s sporting result, despite the rumors.

DR Congo is still scheduled to participate in the intercontinental play-offs in March, where the last qualifying spots for the 2026 World Cup will be determined, following the petition’s dismissal.

FIFA’s ruling may yet be challenged by the NFF in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Under certain procedural guidelines, this impartial organization uses mediation or arbitration to settle issues pertaining to sports.

Whether the NFF will go down that path is still up in the air.
