Abdulrasheed Maina, a former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Force, was rushed to an Abuja hospital after collapsing on Tuesday while attempting to enter his office.
His media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe, revealed the event in a statement released on Wednesday. He said that complications from an untreated knee ailment were what caused the catastrophe.
Mr. Ekwe claims that after the injury, Maina lost his balance and fell, hitting his head on a stairway. He was then sent to a private hospital in the Federal Capital Territory for emergency care.
“On the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Dr. Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, slumped while attempting to access his office premises,” he stated.
The tragedy happened after he lost his balance and fell due to an untreated knee ailment, which banged his head on the stairway.
“First aid was promptly administered by the medical staff, who then hurried him to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent medical attention.”
Maina is still under strict medical surveillance, Ekwe continued, adding that medical professionals are keeping an eye on his condition despite his family’s request for seclusion.
“Dr. Maina is under observation and undergoing urgent medical care at this time. One of the attending physicians recommended, after a preliminary medical evaluation, that plans for an air ambulance medical evacuation be taken into consideration in the event that his health did not stabilize quickly.

Maina is still under strict medical surveillance, according to Ekwe, who also mentioned that while his family has requested anonymity, physicians are keeping an eye on his condition.
“At this time, Dr. Maina is under observation and getting extensive medical care. After a preliminary medical evaluation, one of the attending physicians suggested that, should his condition not stabilize quickly, plans for an air ambulance medical evacuation be taken into consideration.
His medical staff and family are still keeping a careful eye on his development.
“During this crucial period, the family asks the public for prayers, empathy, and respect for their privacy. As events progress, more information will be shared,” the message said.
Maina was convicted of pension fraud and served a jail sentence before being released from Kuje Correctional Center.
He was found guilty in November 2021 by a Federal High Court in Abuja on allegations of money laundering involving more than N2 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned him in October 2019, but he entered a not guilty plea to the 12-count accusation.
Trial judge Okon Abang ruled that Maina had embezzled more than N2 billion from retirees, the majority of whom had passed away before enjoying the rewards of their hard work.
In May 2023, the Court of Appeal maintained the conviction and the eight-year prison term.
