Afrobeats musician Omah Lay has disclosed that he once thought fellow superstar Davido disliked him. However, this notion proved to be incorrect and unintentionally led to their Grammy-nominated collaboration, With You.
The singer made the revelation in a GRAMMY red carpet interview with OkayAfrica, shared by HYPETRIBE on Monday, when he pondered on the early misunderstanding that influenced his first impressions of the award-winning artist.
Omah Lay described how, while at home, he happened to come upon a video of Davido’s response to his music, which completely transformed his life.
“I was actually in the house going through it when I saw it, and I went insane.”
It was because I was unaware of Davido’s characteristics. I believed we were at odds. I assumed he didn’t like me,” he said.
He clarified that once they linked, the miscommunication soon vanished, characterizing their eventual cooperation as natural and seamless.
“It was funny, and we connected so well after that. “Boom—magic happened,” he continued.
he bond resulted in ‘With You’, released in 2025, a collaboration with DMW leader, which marked a key milestone in Omah Lay’s career by winning him his first-ever Grammy nomination.
Omah Lay acknowledged the breadth of Nigeria’s representation in the category and expressed confidence when asked about his expectations before to the awards.
When asked who he thought would win, he replied, “Me and Davido, of course.” However, Burna, Ayra, and Wizkid are present. “Any of us—I mean, we are representing Nigeria,” he remarked.
Tyla of South Africa won Best African Music Performance for Push 2 Start, defeating Davido and Omah Lay’s With You, Burna Boy’s Love, and Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s Gimme Dat, despite the notable presence of Nigerian celebrities.
However, this nomination demonstrates Nigeria’s ongoing influence on the international music scene and solidifies Omah Lay’s growing prominence in Afrobeats.
