The German team confirmed on Thursday that veteran striker Edin Dzeko has committed to Bundesliga 2 team Schalke till the end of the current campaign.
In the midst of a faltering offensive, the captain of Bosnia and Herzegovina was called in to boost Schalke’s chances of promotion.
With just 22 goals in 18 games, Schalke leads the Bundesliga 2 standings by four points; only three teams in the league have scored fewer.
Dzeko, 39, a former forward for Manchester City and Inter Milan, comes from Serie A team Fiorentina, where he had a little role this season.
In a statement, Dzeko stated, “I’ve been following the club since their initial interest and have watched several Schalke games. It’s very impressive how the team has developed this season after some difficult years.”
Schalke, seven-time German champions, have been demoted twice in the last ten years, most recently at the conclusion of the 2022–2023 campaign, but not since 1958.
Before joining City, where he won two Premier League titles, Dzeko was the Bundesliga’s top scorer in 2010 after winning the championship with Wolfsburg in 2009 and scoring 85 goals in 142 games in Germany.
