Despite rumors linking the Italian international to Arsenal, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is certain Sandro Tonali won’t attempt to arrange a transfer away from the Magpies.
After reports in Italy stated a Tonali representation had contacted Arsenal, rumors of a surprise deadline day transfer to the Gunners on Monday were swiftly dispelled.
The drama surrounding Alexander Isak’s actions before he pushed through a Premier League record £125 million ($171 million) transfer to Liverpool in September plagued Newcastle’s season-long preparations.
When asked if he worried a similar scenario with Tonali during the summer transfer window, Howe supported the 25-year-old’s commitment.
Howe stated on Tuesday, “I don’t think so, but a lot of things happen without my knowledge.”
“To the best of my knowledge, we have a player who is both an exceptional football player and an exceptional person. It would surprise me that he is so content here, has a wonderful relationship with me and his teammates, and appears to be extremely content with himself.
However, it is a fact of football that our finest players will always draw attention from other teams.
“Obviously, Sandro contributes to our goal of keeping the team cohesive and forward-thinking by playing to the best of his abilities and supporting the team.”
Despite injury issues and a busy schedule with Newcastle still participating in four competitions, Howe was unable to conceal his irritation at not being able to bolster his team during the transfer window.
Financial sustainability regulations have made it difficult for Newcastle to invest, even with the support of the Saudi royal wealth fund.
“Really, we had no other choice,” he continued.
“I believe we are under financial constraints because we have only been active in one transfer window in the last four or five, so we have to be really smart and we have decided to wait until the summer.”
Ahead of Wednesday’s away second leg of the semi-final against Manchester City, Newcastle’s League Cup defense is in jeopardy.
Howe’s team won the title last season, ending a 70-year wait for a domestic championship. However, they must overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Pep Guardiola’s team away from home.
Howe declared, “It’s going to be an enormous challenge, and there’s no bigger challenge than Manchester City away.” “But we’re going to give it a good go because we believe in ourselves.”
