Due to contested sanctions, Kun Khalifat left the NPFL.

After being sanctioned for missing their Matchday 24 match against El-Kanemi Warriors, Kun Khalifat FC announced their immediate exit from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The team announced the move in a formal statement on Wednesday, expressing “shock, disappointment, and outrage” over the NPFL’s decision to punish them N10 million and deny them three goals and three points.

According to Kun Khalifat, logistical issues, such as the team’s cars breaking down, made it impossible to honor the impacted match, which was set for Monday, February 2, 2026. The club claims that a letter dated February 1, 2026, properly alerted the NPFL Board of the issue.

Michael Amaefula, the club’s CEO, signed the statement, which accused the NPFL of disregarding their correspondence and unilaterally postponing the game before enforcing what it called “harsh and disproportionate” sanctions.

It also called the penalties a “travesty of justice,” claiming that league organizers were unwilling to interact with teams in an open and equitable way.

“The decision to forfeit 3 points and 3 goals, coupled with a fine of N10m, is not only disproportionate but a clear indication of the NPFL’s bias against our club,” the statement says in part. The sanctions, in our opinion, are an absurdity of justice and show a lack of will to interact with clubs in an open and equitable way.

“We, Kun Khalifat FC, now declare our immediate departure from the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) due to these unjust punishments. We can no longer support a league that puts punishment above justice and fairness and ignores the difficulties experienced by its member clubs.

Along with pushing other teams to demand reforms and increased responsibility from the league’s management, the club also urged the NPFL to review its policies and procedures to guarantee that member clubs are treated fairly.

Kun Khalifat stated that in spite of the withdrawal, it would keep looking for new ways to show off its skills and improve Nigerian football.

Along with Remo Stars, Ikorodu City, and Barau FC, the team is one of four privately owned teams participating in the 2025–2026 NPFL season.
