In a rematch of their historic 2015 fight, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will square off again in September. Netflix said Monday that it will stream the fight live from the dazzling Sphere in Las Vegas.
The bout, which is set for September 19, is the first professional boxing event to take place at the Sphere, a futuristic stadium that opened in 2023 and gained notoriety for its enormous wraparound interior screen and immersive environment.
Since their first encounter, known as the “Fight of the Century,” more than a decade has gone by.
With 4.6 million pay-per-view purchases and nearly 600 million dollars in revenue, that fight broke financial records. It’s estimated that Mayweather, who prevailed handily on points, made over $300 million that evening alone.
Even though both men are now in their late forties, their desire for a second installment has never completely subsided. When Mayweather declared last week that he will be coming out of retirement again, speculation grew.
“Floyd and I gave the world what still stands as the biggest fight in boxing history,” Pacquiao said in a joint statement. The fans deserve this rematch since they have waited long enough.
The 47-year-old Filipino legend made it apparent that this is more than just another paycheck to him. He stated, “I want Floyd to always remember who gave him that one loss on his professional record.” “As always, I dedicate this fight to honor the Philippines and my fellow Filipinos worldwide.”
Before retiring in 2017, Mayweather was undefeated in 50 professional fights and brushed off any expectation of a different result. “I’ve already engaged in combat and defeated Manny once. The outcome will be the same this time.
Despite formally leaving the sport nine years ago, Mayweather has continued to be prominent through a number of exhibition appearances.
Pacquiao, who had previously retired in 2021 to concentrate on a presidential campaign in the Philippines, also made a comeback to competition last year after a four-year hiatus. He was drawn against Mario Barrios in his Las Vegas comeback.
The event marks Netflix’s next daring foray into live sports.
Few boxers are as well-known worldwide as Mayweather and Pacquiao, and the streaming behemoth has been focusing more and more on high-profile events.
