Folashade Aliu, an aide to Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the former presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), has denounced the proposed penalties against her principal by the United States.
According to Naija News, US lawmakers have introduced a new bill that will increase accountability for Nigeria’s violations of human rights.
The Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 includes provisions for possible sanctions against former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Fulani militants.
Aliu, however, insisted that Kwankwaso is a nationalist and a decent person, claiming that the sanctions were politically driven.
In an interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” on Thursday, she made this claim and added that the action was extremely nefarious.
“There is no evidence that Kwankwaso is associated with terrorism or religious bigotry,” she stated.
That’s how I want to show you that this whole situation is genuinely nefarious and driven by politics.
“Kwankwaso is a good-hearted nationalist; some of his staff members are Christians, as is his running mate.
Therefore, let me add that if you look at that bill, it discusses Kwankwaso’s status as the first governor with any connection to Sharia, which is untrue.
