The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that it is powerless to stop lawmakers from joining the ruling party, characterizing the recent surge in defections as a sign of support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Felix Morka, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made this statement on Tuesday in an interview with Arise Television in response to worries about the increasing number of governors joining the APC, including the governor of Kano State’s recent defection.
According to Morka, governors who defected to the ruling party were supporting what he called a “resurging Nigeria” under Tinubu.
He stated, “What you see is governors who have chosen to join our party in order to identify with this resurgent Nigeria that this President is clearly positioning Nigeria to be.”
He went on to say that the APC welcomed new members and would not prevent lawmakers from joining.
“Those who join our party make us happy and eager. We cannot act as gatekeepers to keep out those who wish to join our group. Morka stated, “We don’t do that because it is undemocratic.”
The APC spokeswoman allayed worries that the defections may result in a one-party state, claiming that Nigeria had previously enjoyed comparable political dominance without jeopardizing democracy.
He stated, “At one point in our history, the Peoples Democratic Party ruled Nigeria with roughly the same number of governors.”
“I was highly involved in politics at the time, and because the PDP had so many governors, there was no threat of a one-party state anywhere. Morka continued, “I think we shouldn’t equate people joining our party with that manner since it isn’t the case anymore.
