The local African Democratic Congress (ADC) office was reportedly set on fire by suspected political thugs, causing tension in the Ubima community in Rivers State’s Ikwerre Local Government Area.
According to Naija News, the attackers allegedly invaded the region with heavy weaponry, causing intermittent gunshots in the neighborhood, which is the hometown of former Transportation Minister Chibuike Amaechi.
According to locals, the attackers broke into the neighborhood on Thursday night, firing repeatedly before setting the party secretariat on fire.
The event happened prior to Amaechi’s planned Friday community visit, during which he was supposed to formally register at the ward level with the ADC.
One of the party’s well-known leaders, Amaechi is establishing the party as a significant opposition force aiming to remove President Bola Tinubu from office in the general elections of 2027.
According to neighborhood sources who spoke to Vanguard, the attackers strolled across the area while firing randomly, frightening locals.
According to additional information, the alleged thugs reappeared early on Friday morning and set up a roadblock on the Omuawa-Ubima Road.
Witnesses said that the gang prevented supporters from entering Ubima prior to the scheduled political rally by stopping buses and cars carrying ADC banners.
Many locals reportedly stayed indoors for safety as a result of the development, which increased tension in the neighborhood.
After the attack, security personnel were subsequently called to the scene. Although the full amount of the damage to the party office was unknown at the time this report was filed, their intervention was reported to have restored peace.
