Opposition lawmakers criticize the 2025 Budget’s non-implementation.

Mull Sack of Accountant-General and Finance Minister

Members of the House of Representatives’ Opposition Caucus have expressed grave concerns about the purported non-implementation of the 2025 Appropriations Act, and there are signs that they may demand the dismissal of important finance officials due to what they claim were broken promises to the legislature.

The opposition MPs announced that a strategic meeting has been set for Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. to discuss urgent national and legislative issues in a statement jointly signed by the Caucus Leaders, Hon. Fred Agbedi and Hon. Afam Ogene.

The announcement states that the meeting’s topics of discussion would include legislative oversight, budgetary stewardship, and the effectiveness of the House’s minority leadership.

The alleged inability to implement the 2025 budget for a full fiscal year, despite the House approving all loan requests presented by the Executive, is a significant subject on the agenda, according to the caucus. Members are expected to examine allegations that money allocated for major projects was not disbursed on schedule.

The caucus is also taking into consideration calls for increased responsibility in the financial sector, such as the potential removal of the Federation’s Accountant-General and Minister of Finance.

The caucus claims that the officials made promises to the House that the capital components of the 2025 budget would be executed and that unpaid bills would be settled by the end of the year, but these promises were not kept.

The opposition MPs also want to demand copies of all gazetted legislation, the votes and proceedings of both chambers, and all bills enacted by the 10th Assembly. According to the caucus, recent changes to tax regulations have made this action imperative.

In light of worries that certain minority leaders may not have lived up to caucus members’ expectations, the gathering will also assess the minority leadership’s performance. It is anticipated that any corrective actions will be taken into account.

According to the announcement, members will be informed of the meeting’s location on Tuesday.
