LAWMA will discipline default PSP operators and close the Olusosun and Solous dumpsites.

Plans to permanently close the Olusosun and Solous dumpsites and crack down on underperforming Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operators in the state have been revealed by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

This was revealed by Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the managing director of LAWMA, while visiting the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) headquarters in Lagos.

According to Gbadegesin, the state administration had given its approval for the construction of recovery materials facilities and transfer loading stations, which would be operational within 18 months.

He said that this was a component of the state’s initiatives to improve trash infrastructure.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has approved the construction of two transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities in the hardware—or infrastructure—area, allowing us to close the Olusosun and Soluos landfills in Lagos.

“This development excites us greatly. The project is anticipated to be finished within the next 18 months as construction begins in the coming days.

“We will be able to treat and dispose of 4,000 tonnes of waste per day in Lagos state thanks to the facility,” he stated.

Additionally, he stated that the agency would work with the House of Assembly to examine the 2017 Environmental Management and Protection Laws.

Regarding the operating system, we would like to coordinate with the House of Assembly to study the long-overdue reform known as the Environmental Management and Protection Laws of 2017.”

It will take roughly six months to complete the change.

We will then proceed with a reform of the PSP system. The reform will be beneficial.

This is because we will make sure that PSP operators who are currently employed and have a track record of outstanding performance receive the assistance they need to update their fleet.

“The serious PSP operators will be able to improve their services thanks to this improvement. We will eliminate the non-essential PSP operators who are causing us problems and are not functioning,” Gbadegesin stated.

According to him, 27 insignificant PSP operators were kicked out of the system in 2025 due to poor performance.

We eliminated 27 PSP operators who were not serious from our system last year, and as of this year, 22 PSP operators are on their final warning.

Here, we emphasize that we will not defend any PSP operator who is not acting appropriately.

“We are alerting them to the fact that enough is enough. There is no more justification because dumpsites are suitable and easily accessible.

So how do we make that work? “There is a problem that they should come to us as LAWMA and fix if one PSP operator is complying so well while the others are not,” he stated.

In response to Lagos citizens’ grievances over garbage management, the LAWMA chief also revealed enhancements and extensions to its customer service.

Additionally, we have enhanced and broadened our customer service, making it easier for residents to contact us via our social media accounts, toll-free numbers, and email addresses in the event that they have problems.

“We are not embarrassed to reply to you and address the matter on social media if you file a complaint there,” he stated.
