Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the late supreme leader of Iran, will be laid to rest in the sacred city of Mashhad.
The Fars news agency verified this development on Tuesday.
Khamenei, who ruled Iran for 36 years, was assassinated on Saturday at the age of 86 during a wave of attacks spearheaded by the Israeli military and the United States, according to Naija News.
It is said that the deceased leader’s father is interred in the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city.
The Revolutionary Guards said on its Telegram account that a “large farewell ceremony” will take place in Tehran prior to the burial.
The burial date has not been revealed.
Following Khamenei’s passing, a three-person temporary council consisting of the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council was given authority until his replacement was chosen by the Assembly of Experts.
According to Fars, which cited a person with knowledge of the procedure, the assembly’s last gathering might be delayed until after Khamenei’s funeral “for security reasons.”
In the meantime, after a devastating attack over the weekend, the US government has denied any involvement in the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to Naija News, Elbridge Colby, a senior Pentagon official, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Israel carried out the operation that resulted in Khamenei’s murder and that it had nothing to do with any American military mission.
He clarified that the move was not a part of Washington’s regional effort, but rather an Israeli operation.
Colby said this in response to inquiries from senators who wanted to know if the US was looking to overthrow Iran’s regime.
He claimed that American actions were not motivated by such a goal.
