
A Toyota Corolla with registration number DKA 337 CB has been found and a suspected car thief has been apprehended by Akwa Ibom State police command officers.
After tracking the car to Nkwot Ikono Village in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, Sunday Okon, a male suspect from Nna Enin Village in Uruan Local Government Area, was captured.
In a statement released in Uyo on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the command stated that on January 20, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m., while on routine night patrol along Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo, the operatives received a distress call from a man (name withheld) reporting that his Toyota Corolla vehicle had been stolen at gunpoint.
The statement claims that when the cops quickly arrived on the site, they found that the culprit had taken off with the car. They then used intelligence to track him down and took him into custody.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recovered a stolen vehicle in Uyo and arrested an armed robbery and car-snatching suspect,” the statement said.
“On January 20, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m., while on a routine night patrol along Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Operatives of the Command promptly responded to a distress call from a Bolt driver (name withheld), who reported that he had been robbed of his Toyota Corolla vehicle at gunpoint.”
“Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that the suspects had fled with the vehicle,” the Akwa Ibom police official added. However, the stolen car was located in Nkwot Ikono Village, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, thanks to quick intelligence gathering.As a result, Okon (Male) of Nna Enin Village, Uruan Local Government Area, was taken into custody one Sunday while driving a stolen Toyota Corolla with registration number DKA 337 CB. During initial questioning, the suspect admitted to committing the crime.
According to the cammand’s spokeswoman, an investigation has been launched to capture further criminal gang members and retrieve their operable weapons.
Baba Mohammed Azare, the police commissioner, has praised the officers for their professionalism and quick response while urging the public to maintain composure and report any criminal activity in their neighborhoods.
In terms of safety, Akwa Ibom is typically regarded as one of Nigeria’s more tranquil South-South states.
But like many cities, its capital, Uyo, has witnessed an increase in carjackings and “one-chance” robberies that target transportation service providers.
