FRSC acknowledges 7 deaths, not 30 in the Kano crash

In contrast to media claims that claimed 30 people died in the recent road traffic collision in Kano State, the Federal Road Safety Corps, or FRSC, has clarified information pertaining to the incident and confirmed that seven people were killed.

The Corps said the figure was determined through “on the spot assessment and verified rescue operations” by its operatives in a press statement signed by Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer and Assistant Corps Marshal, on Monday. The Corps urged the public and media outlets to rely on officially confirmed information to prevent misinformation and excessive public anxiety.

The FRSC reports that the deadly collision happened at approximately 08:33 on Sunday, February 8, 2026, along Hadejia Road near Kwanar Danja, in the Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to the FRSC, a commercial DAF trailer carrying 105 passengers with registration number KTG467YG was involved in the collision.

According to the Corps, seven adult men were slain and 70 victims—55 male adults and 15 male children—were injured to varied degrees out of the 105 people involved.

It further stated that the FRSC emergency rescue crew successfully recovered 30 of the victims without suffering any injuries.

According to the Corps’ preliminary investigation, “Speed Violation which eventually led to Loss of Control (SPV/LOC)” was the cause of the collision.

Mr. Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of FRSC, responded to the tragedy by calling speeding “one of the deadliest traffic violations” and cautioning drivers against making highways into death traps.

“Control is compromised, reaction time is reduced, and the chances of survival in a crash become minimal once a driver exceeds the prescribed speed limit,” he stated.

No journey is worth the loss of innocent lives, the Corps Marshal emphasized.

Furthermore, he disclosed that the number of fatalities documented in a single collision is a clear example of the terrible results of careless driving, pointing out that fast-moving automobiles can quickly destroy entire families.

Mohammed further stressed that drivers who disregard speed limits will be subject to the full force of the law, without exception, and warned that the FRSC will keep stepping up enforcement efforts across the country.

The FRSC warned that no family should have to endure the sorrow of losing loved ones in avoidable collisions, and asked all road users—commercial drivers in particular—to drive sensibly, observe speed limits, and put safety over haste.
