December fuel and cooking gas costs down year over year — NBS

Abuja — According to independent statistics issued by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the price of cooking gas and gasoline decreased year over year in December 2025, indicating a general easing of household energy expenditures.

According to bureau data, both Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also referred to as gasoline, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is frequently used for cooking, had significant price drops from December 2024 as well as slight month-over-month decreases.

Although the declining trend was visible in the majority of states and geopolitical zones, the NBS pointed out that prices still differed greatly by region.

Gas for cooking

The average cost of refilling a 5 kilogram cylinder of LPG decreased by 1.20 percent per month, from ₦5,425.78 in November 2025 to ₦5,360.43 in December 2025, according to the report.

The price decreased by 25.31 percent year over year from ₦7,177.27 in December 2024.

According to the NBS, “the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) decreased by 1.20 percent on a month-over-month basis.” The annual decline was 25.31 percent.

According to a state-level analysis, Kaduna had the highest average cost of ₦5,838.66 for refilling a 5 kg cylinder, followed by Jigawa at ₦5,825.09 and Osun at ₦5,777.80. At ₦4,855.80, Katsina had the lowest price.

Additionally, the average retail price for refilling a 12.5 kg LPG cylinder decreased by 0.74 percent from November 2025 to December 2025, from ₦13,538.79 to ₦13,438.90.

The price decreased by 22.20 percent year over year from ₦17,274.16 in December 2024.

According to the bureau, Abia had the highest average cost for refilling a 12.5 kg cylinder on a state-by-state basis, at ₦14,489.96. Osun came in second with ₦14,444.50 and Delta with ₦14,393.17.

Gasoline

Additionally, according to the NBS, the average retail price of gasoline was ₦1,048.63 in December 2025, down 11.81 percent from ₦1,189.12 in December 2024.

According to the research, consumers paid an average of ₦1,048.63 for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) in December 2025.

The average price decreased by 1.20 percent month over month from ₦1,061.35 in November 2025.

Additional investigation revealed that Oyo State had the lowest average gas price at ₦996.55, while Kogi State had the highest at ₦1,104.45. The South West was the least expensive region overall, while the North East was the most costly.
