Customs transfers confiscated weapons to NCCSALW

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has received confiscated ammunition, cartridges, and other prohibited weapons from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command.

Additionally, the command said that within a month, anti-smuggling efforts generated about N2.7 billion.

The command’s headquarters in Ibadan, Oyo State, hosted the transfer.

The guns were recovered from people trying to smuggle them into Oyo State, according to Deputy Controller of Customs Mr. Wale Moses Adewole, Acting Controller of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, who presented the confiscated materials. He clarified that the handover complies with interagency cooperation and established protocols.

Adewole denounced smuggling as a major threat to both economic stability and national security, saying, “The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to ensuring that all seized prohibited items are handed over to the appropriate authorities in accordance with laid-down rules.”

Through information, long-term patrols, and planned enforcement actions, the command documented notable seizures at several flashpoints within its jurisdiction. According to Adewole, the total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seizures was N2,701,762,558, which is more than 15% greater than the same period the previous year.

He stated that the command has exceeded its 2025 income goal, adding, “This reflects improved compliance, effective monitoring, and the commitment of our officers to lawful trade facilitation.”

A Volvo truck and a Volkswagen bus were among the vehicles seized, along with foreign parboiled rice, used tires, premium motor spirit, used clothing, cannabis sativa (Indian hemp), codeine syrup, tramadol, used shoes, foreign spaghetti, used compressors, pharmaceuticals, and vehicles like a Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Jeep, Chevrolet EQ, and Mercedes GLE.

Adewole emphasized that the command will continue to carry out its statutory obligations while cautioning smugglers and other criminal actors to stop engaging in illegal activity.

South-West Zonal Commander Mr. Wey Olabisi, who accepted the guns on behalf of NCCSALW, praised the Nigeria Customs Service for their cooperation and emphasized how important it is to work together to stop the spread of light and small arms across the country.
