Breaking: After meeting with Bola Tinubu, Kayode Egbetokun allegedly resigns as IGP

According to Presidency sources, President Bola Tinubu has requested that Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, step down from his position.

According to a source who talked to Premium Times, Egbetokun was asked to resign at a Monday meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu will take his post.

Preparations were in progress for a ceremonial transfer ceremony, according to sources at the Presidency and Force Headquarters, even though no official announcement had been made at the time this article was filed.

Later on Tuesday, an official announcement is anticipated.

At the time of this publication, attempts to reach Force Public Relations Officer Ben Hundeyin and presidential spokeswoman Bayo Onanuga were fruitless.

On June 19, 2023, President Tinubu named Egbetokun the 22nd Inspector-General of Police. On October 31, 2023, the Nigeria Police Council formally validated his appointment.

When he reached the required retirement age of 60, he was originally scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024, having been appointed at the age of 58.

But the Police Act was changed by the National Assembly, allowing him to remain IGP for a set four years unless the President removes him.

The Presidency had earlier argued that the modified Police Act 2024, which permits an appointed IGP to serve a four-year term regardless of age or years of service, made his ongoing tenure in office legal.

There were several difficulties throughout Egbetokun’s term, such as claims of violations of human rights and popular outrage at the extension of his term.

The Presidency had upheld its stance until the most recent event, despite prior objections from civil society organizations and certain citizens.

After the official transfer, Tunji Disu is anticipated to take over as the new Inspector-General of Police.
