Malaysia will introduce a direct platform for hiring international workers, including Nigerians.

In order to eliminate the private recruitment agencies that have historically controlled the process, the Malaysian government is getting ready to launch a new digital platform that would allow firms to hire foreign workers directly.

The program, which was introduced by Malaysia’s Human Resources Minister, Datuk Ramakrishnan, aims to reduce recruitment costs, stop worker exploitation, and improve transparency in the nation’s foreign labor system, according to an Economic Times story.

The Malaysian Reserve was the first to report on the development.

According to Ramakrishnan, the excessive dependence on middlemen has exposed several foreign laborers to exploitation, such as exorbitant hiring fees, debt bondage, and practices associated with contemporary slavery.

“The matter has been brought up in Parliament and in the press on numerous occasions. According to The Malaysian Reserve, he stated, “We want to eliminate the middleman problem.”

Many foreign workers must pay large recruitment fees even before leaving their native countries, the minister pointed out. Workers frequently take out loans to satisfy these needs, which results in them arriving in Malaysia already in debt. In certain cases, they are also given positions that are very different from what they were promised at the beginning.

The administration is pursuing a major shift away from the agent-led recruiting system, he noted, as a result of the repeated concerns about recruitment misconduct made to Parliament and by civil society organizations.

Through a centralized digital portal, Malaysian companies will have the opportunity to interact directly with prospective foreign workers under the proposed system.

In order to reduce deception, important facts like job roles, pay, and employment terms will be explicitly mentioned and decided upon prior to contracts being finalized.

It is anticipated that the platform will streamline the hiring process for foreign workers in Malaysia, lower overall expenses, and improve monitoring.
