Due to an unfulfilled agreement, ASUU has resumed its indefinite strike at Taraba University.

Citing the Taraba State Government’s failure to carry out agreements made with the union on January 17, 2025, the Taraba State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has resumed its previously postponed indefinite strike.

A news release containing the judgment was provided to journalists in Jalingo on Wednesday and signed by Joshua Garba Mbave, the union’s head.

The statement said that the government’s failure to take “concrete and verifiable steps” to fulfill its responsibilities was the reason for the reactivation of the industrial action.

Although the union bemoaned the lack of significant progress, it acknowledged that the strike had previously been halted in good faith to give the government enough time to resolve the issues that had been agreed upon.

“The general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders are hereby informed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Taraba State University, TSU Branch, that it has resumed its previously suspended total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” the statement said.

ASUU clarified that after reviewing the situation at its congress on February 18, 2026, it decided that it had no choice but to resume industrial action due to the ongoing disregard for long-standing grievances.

The union insisted that before making the decision, it had been patient and had communicated with the authorities.

The lack of a working pension plan for the organization, unpaid salary arrears to instructors, and unpaid accrued Earned Academic Allowances were some of the reasons given for the renewed strike.

The freshly drafted 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, which ASUU claimed was essential to enhancing employee welfare and stabilizing the university system, was also allegedly not being implemented by the authorities.

Mbave claimed that the ongoing difficulties had lasted for years and were still having an impact on Taraba State University’s general operations, employee morale, and productivity.

He emphasized that the strike was only resumed as a last resort after extensive negotiations with the Taraba State Government had failed to yield the expected outcomes.

In order to address the problem and stop additional disruptions to academic activity within the school and throughout the state, the union urged pertinent stakeholders to act immediately.
