Despite concerns about its future, the Peoples Democratic Party would participate in the 2027 general elections, according to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
According to Naija News, he denied rumors that the party would disappear before the next election when he spoke at a press conference on Friday.
He stated unequivocally that the PDP will be on the ballot and that it still aspires to do well in various regions of the nation.
Wike clarified that despite not producing a president since 2015, the party has continued to function at all levels of government.
He emphasized that rather than focusing solely on obtaining the presidency, the primary goal should be how to maintain the party’s strength and activity.
He suggested that party members concentrate more on strengthening their local and state governments.
He contends that power at lower levels is crucial to being relevant and that political success is not just dependent on winning the presidency.
Additionally, the former governor of Rivers State cautioned against presenting a presidential candidate hastily without adequate preparation.
“The PDP will be on the ballot in 2027,” he declared. The party will have an effect in certain sectors, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us. We haven’t had a president since 2015, but the party is still in existence. Maintaining the party’s relevance and activity should be the main priority. Parties must also engage in fierce competition at the state level, so it’s not just about the presidency.
“Elections need mental and emotional preparedness, thus you cannot rush to propose a presidential candidate without adequate preparation. The party will be weakened if it wins the president without maintaining control at lesser levels.
He pointed out that running for office necessitates both mental preparedness and thorough preparation, and that in order for parties to be competitive, they must gain support from the general public.
He went on to say that a party’s impact and prospects for long-term success can be diminished by winning at the top without having strong control in other regions.
Since 2025, the PDP has been grappling with internal problems, with various factions conducting independent meetings and pursuing legal actions to assert leadership.
Concerns regarding the party’s unity as the 2027 elections approach have been raised by the crisis.
