Samu Aghehowa, a striker from Nigeria, sustains an ACL injury before to the World Cup.

Samu Aghehowa, a forward for Porto and Spain, has suffered a severe injury to his knee that has essentially eliminated his prospects of playing in the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

The 21-year-old striker, who is of Nigerian descent, suffered a long-term injury that would ruin an otherwise stellar season when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

Aghehowa sustained the injury during Porto’s match against Sporting CP in the Primeira Liga, and he was substituted out at halftime. The ACL tear, one of the most dangerous injuries football players may sustain, was confirmed by further medical testing.

He would be out for the rest of the 2025–26 season because it usually takes five months to more than a year to recover from an ACL tear. This occurs in spite of Porto’s impressive domestic record, as the team leads the league by four points and has advanced to the Europa League knockout stage.

Aghehowa had been playing well prior to the injury, tallying 20 goals in 32 games in all competitions.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the injury will prevent him from competing in the 2026 World Cup, which starts on June 11. Spain may now have to play the tournament without one of their most potential attacking players after being drawn in Group H with Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay.

Since making his debut in November 2024, Aghehowa has made four senior appearances for Spain. In October, he started a World Cup qualifying match against Bulgaria. After a failed transfer to Chelsea in 2024, he moved from Atletico Madrid to Porto, sparking excitement over his quick ascension. Newcastle United was also interested in him last summer.

As tournament preparations proceed, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is anticipated to rely on substitutes Mikel Oyarzabal, Alvaro Morata, Borja Iglesias, and Jorge de Frutos due to Aghehowa’s absence.
