As part of his administration’s revitalized development program, Kebbi State Governor Comrade Nasir Idris has stepped up efforts to reposition the state’s tourism industry by utilizing its rich natural resources and cultural legacy.

Kebbi is also known for holding significant yearly cultural events that draw tourists from all around Nigeria and abroad, including as the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival, Rigata Cultural Festival, Uhola International Cultural Festival, and traditional horse racing championships.

Governor Idris has created three new ministries and an agency devoted to the development of solid minerals, animal health, the digital economy, and investment promotion in an effort to increase tourism and encourage investment. Along the River Niger route, the governor has also obtained federal approval for the construction of a naval base in Yauri, which is anticipated to improve security and boost local economic activity.

In order to fully utilize the state’s abundant agricultural, livestock, and solid mineral resources, the administration is also seeking partnerships with both domestic and foreign investors, according to a statement released by Abdullahi Idris Sadaukin Zuru, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy.

He pointed out that while earlier governments, from the time of the now-defunct North Western State to succeeding Kebbi administrations, attempted to draw in investors, the intended results were not entirely realized.

The present administration’s strategy, according to analysts, shows a strong belief that the tourism industry and adjacent industries may greatly boost domestically generated income and improve job prospects for locals.

The 2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival, which is set for February 11–14, is currently in advanced stages of development. The festival is the first of several cultural events that will take place throughout the year.

With the assistance of the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Muhammad Mera, and the festival’s director-general, Alhaji Safiyanu Garba Bena, the main organizing committee, led by the deputy governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, has started a thorough renovation of the city’s many event centers’ deteriorating buildings and facilities.

The festival’s highlights will include traditional entertainment, the renowned grand fishing competition, and displays of animals, solid minerals, and agricultural produce.

The historic occasion is anticipated to be attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, traditional leaders, tourists, political figures, and commercial stakeholders from both inside and outside the nation.
