Nigeria’s telecom sector saw new growth in December 2025, according to the most recent figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission, or NCC. Total active subscriptions rose to 179.64 million from 177.43 million in November.
The national teledensity increased from 81.84 percent in December to 82.87 percent in December.
According to a breakdown by operators, MTN Nigeria continued to hold the top spot with 93.06 million subscribers, or 51.87 percent of the market. Globacom recorded 22.23 million members (12.39%), while Airtel Nigeria came in second with 60.89 million subscribers (33.94%). 3.23 million customers (1.80%) were on T2.
With mobile GSM subscriptions reaching 147.52 million, the total number of active internet subscriptions increased from 144.79 million in November to 148.17 million in December.
Broadband penetration rose to 51.97 percent from 50.58 percent in November due to an increase in broadband subscriptions to 112.67 million.
In December, there were 1,393 porting activities across mobile networks, with MTN accounting for 964, Globacom for 217, and Airtel for 206.
As a result of rising demand for digital services across the country, total data consumption increased to 1.39 million terabytes in December from 1.24 million terabytes in November.
Telecom analysts responded to the numbers by stating that Nigerians’ growing dependence on mobile connectivity for social contact, commerce, and education is highlighted by the consistent increase in subscriptions and data usage.
“The growth in broadband penetration and data traffic highlights the urgency for sustained network investments, especially in 4G and 5G infrastructure to maintain service quality and accommodate rising demand,” according to industry analysts.
The NCC noted that the Commission is still dedicated to increasing broadband penetration and raising service quality across the country and credited the performance to continuing legislative changes and network expansion investments.
The Commission further stated that it would keep collaborating with operators to promote inclusive access, improve customer satisfaction, and aid Nigeria’s objectives in the digital economy.
